Fleshy Creativity: Mattering And The Queer Body In Transvisual Theory: In Transvisual Theory

The paper presents the Tranvisuality-project, developed in the past decade as a response to the exaggerated focus on discourse critique in visual culture studies and its reliance on the classic Western agenda of aliquid statpro aliquo. The project addresses the role of the visual as a form of matter: a dimension which allow for diverse and traversing social sensibleness. a topological relationality instead of representations – which is still not really understood. The Tranvisuality-project further adopts theories of non-representation, ANT and phenomenology ‘on the limit’ to detail what is implied by mattering. This paper presents reflections on the body as an aspect of mattering in four steps: a. First it presents the idea of transvisuality as a form of mattered meaning, which work by sensible organization of the visual, b. On this background it debates aspects of the past half century’s feminist research into the body as an opening to the issue of mattering, c. This is then related to Maurice Merleau-Ponty’s phenomenology ‘on the limit’ which is reinterpreted as a body without organs (BwO), d. In the final part, the reflections are concluded by a review of post-Duchampian art as fleshy creativity.
