Many of the biggest humanitarian crises take place in areas with very low literacy rates. This limits the options for disseminating necessary information, including the medical instructions that a patient needs to be able to self-administer a medical treatment. Despite growing attention to health literacy and its influence on adherence in high- and middle-income countries, we have only seen very limited research into developing approaches that could work for people of very low or no literacy. The objective of this thesis is to discuss the use and usefulness of picture-based medical instructions to aid comprehension and recall of drug regimen for low-literate patients during humanitarian response.
