It has been difficult to measure the median survival of HIV-infected patients by comparing selected HIV samples and control groups. Data from the Danish HIV Cohort Study combined with the Central Registration System has made it possible to accurately compare the survival of HIV-infected persons and uninfected persons. In 2000 to 2005, the median remaining lifetime at age 25 years in the general population was 51 years and 39 years for HIV-infected persons without hepatitis C virus infection. In conclusion, persons with HIV infection have a good, albeit far from normal, life expectancy.
