Primære forskningsområder

  • Characterization of cellular and molecular mechanisms involved in foetal and adult programming of the mammalian liver with specific emphasis on differentiation of stem/progenitor cells into hepatocytes and cholangiocytes.

  • In vitro programming and differentiation of human hepatic progenitor cells (hHB/HepaRG), human embryonic stem cells (hESC), and induced pluripotent stem cells (hiPSC) along hepatic cell lineages with special emphasis on nutritional effects of the microenvironment

  • Identification of novel molecular mechanisms involved in repair and regeneration of an injured liver using experimental animal models in mouse and rat.

Aktuel forskning

  • Investigations aimed at elucidating a possible role of hexose (glucose versus fructose) induced changes in mitochondrial phenotype during programming of liver cell differentiation
  • Generation of an in vitro system for studying hepatic differentiation and hepatic associated diseases using induced pluripotent stem cells and gene editing

Research based teaching

Hanne Cathrine Bisgaard has been involved in pre- and post-graduate teaching in Chemistry, Cell Biology, Biochemistry, and Endocrinology at SUND/KU and Cell Biology and Biotechnology at Roskilde University. Currently, our group is mainly involved in teaching medical and odontology undergraduate students the chemistry of cellular components in basal human biology at SUND/KU.
In addition, we supervise 2-4 human biology and medical master students in our laboratory per year.
Hanne Cathrine Bisgaard is the administrator of the 1. Semester theoretical course and the integrated obligatory laboratory experimental course entitled “The Chemical Components of the Cell” (275 medical students twice per year/98 odontology students once per year at SUND/KU).
Furthermore, Hanne Cathrine Bisgaard has supervised a number of graduate students and is an active evaluator of Ph.D.-dissertations at both national and international universities.
