N2 - This chapter introduced the multifaced functions which sculptural workshop served from the Renaissance into the nineteenth century. Often perceived primarily as loci of artistic creativity and magic, it is argued that we should also pay attention to the negotiations taking place between artist and commissioner and to the non-glamorous work associated with the making of a sculpture and thereby regard the workshops as spaces where mind and body unite.
