The publication contains editions of two motets by the Rostock composer Georg Patermann (born in the 1580s, died after 1628). The music shows him to be a composer of talent, even by the high standards set by the many protestant church musicians at the start of seventeenth century. It is argued that the pieces re¿ect the way that music was used at that time – as an accompaniment to the celebration of love and as a part of prosperous burghers’ self-presentation.
