N2 - Could there be such a thing as ‘too much control’? This is the overall question that this chapter tries to answer, by showing how recent literature on the relationship between control and technological innovation has overlooked the possibility of ‘too much control’ and its potential ethical consequences. The chapter addresses this novel question by applying it to two classic spaces of the debate about control and tech: war and health. I show that, in war, too much control can be a problem for de- escalation; further I show that, within healthcare, too much control can end up shifting blame and guilt onto patients in problematic ways.
