The guidelines group was selected by the coordinators from the membership of the EHS and included general surgeons from various sub-specialties and specialist abdominal wall surgeons. A patient representative was invited to all group meetings, and was involved in prioritizing outcome parameters. Conflicts of interest for each member were recorded transparently at the beginning of the project. The meetings were funded by the EHS and the British Journal of Surgery (BJS).
