N2 - In order to maintain and improve herd udder health a professionally sound, structured approach is required. For that, veterinary advice and support plays a key role. Such consultation includes selection of preventive measures specific to farm and situation, advice on targeted diagnostics and recommendations on effective, antibiotic-saving mastitis therapy. As part of a project, the fundamental principles of successful udder health work and the steps derivable from the findings of mastitis research were integrated into a computer application that can support an appropriate and systematic course of action. The program can facilitate data acquisition, analysis and the continuity of work, but like any decision support, it must be used with critical expertise. The program reflects the current state of knowledge and provides a basis for further developments in this area.
