N2 - The causes of idiopathic equine headshaking syndrome have not been adequately clarified, although the syndrome is mentioned in literature for over 100 years. In a comprehensive study on aetiology and pathogenesis of idiopathic equine headshaking syndrome, this paper focusses on the evaluation of an online survey among horse breeders within Germany. The results show that age, sex and breed of the horses described by breeders are identical with the general statements about the description of headshakers from other studies. 25.6% of the breeders stated that they expect financial losses from the sale of a headshaker. The average loss is 10-15%. This fact is another reason why the identification of causes of the headshaking syndrome should be pursued in order to create the basis for developing therapeutic and preventive measures in a further step. Then it is possible to protect horse breeders from financial losses and to enable a successful therapy for affected horses.
