N2 - This article explores the importance of emotions as conditional for motivation in medical education. The main principles in self-determination theory and in control-value theory are outlined, and practical consequences which may be drawn from these theories are discussed. Based on the literature we hypothesize that human need for autonomy and competence may be violated by strict regulations and detailed plans for medical education, and that constructive feedback may modify these potential negative effects and support feelings of competence and autonomy.
