The etymology of Lyc. PN Tm̃peime/i-. The Lycian PN Tm̃peime/i- (Limyra, TL 112.1) is nowadays considered to be without etymology. It has been traced back to *temp- ‘to stretch’, but neither further morphological nor semantic analysis has been suggested. It remains, therefore, a still isolated term within Anatolian as well as within Indo-European (G. Neumann, Glossar des Lykischen, 2007: 353, 369). The aim of this talk is twofold. Firstly, it will be confirmed that Lycian Tm̃peime can be traced back to *temp- ‘stretch’ and that it finds an explanation within Anatolian, which is supported by parallels in other IE branches, too. Secondly, it will be showed that the Anatolian terms related to *temp- complete and fit (morphologically and semantically) a well-known IE scenario for this root.
