I am an historian of economic thought. My first book, The Marketizers (Goldsmiths Press, 2022), historicizes the rise of the neoliberal order in America as a response to the extraordinary postwar growth in public expenditures. Its central concern is to examine the ways in which public choice theorists reimagined the relationship between the American state and its citizens as a commercial transaction between a firm and its customers, legitimizing a market turn in the provision of public services.
I am currently in the early stages of a new book project, which examines the origins and development of human capital theory. Tentatively titled Age of Human Capital, the project examines the economic thought of Theodore Schultz, Gary Becker, Paul Romer, and Claudia Goldin.
