My PhD project explores current ethical issues in relation with the notion of love. I will study how ethics and love can be understood within an interpersonal context and will use as my theoretical foundation the works of Søren Kierkegaard and T. W. Adorno. However, I will have to ask if it is legitimate to study them in relation to one another. To do so, I will mainly use a negative methodology to show that when love is separated from ethics, it can have disastrous consequences for individuals. I will then demonstrate the necessity of a humanistic and ethical type of love viable for our time. Lastly, I will study the Christian ethics of the love of the neighbour which urges the Christian to love every single individual who is part of humanity, including their enemy. Having in mind the religious specificity, I will ask if this ethics is viable in our contemporary world.
