Martin Skrydstrup holds a MA and a PhD in cultural anthropology from Columbia University and a MA also in cultural anthropology from the University of Copenhagen. Martin joined the faculty of IFRO in 2012, after two years as a postdoc at Waterworlds, Dept. of Anthropology, University of Copenhagen, where he conducted an ethnography of climate science (link here).

His current work straddles the disciplines of anthropology, science studies and history and is concerned most generally with the relationships between expertise, governance and the constitution of “natural resources”. Thematically, Martin is pursuing research on nature conservation in East Africa, with a particular focus on water, carbon and land. This research is an attempt to understand how the epistemological commitments and empirical facts of scientific forestry have shaped contemporary common sense of “water towers”, “eco-systems”, “payment for environmental services” and “land tenure” in the Mau Forest, Kenya.

Martin is currently on leave from IFRO (2013-14), funded by the Wenner-Gren Foundation for Anthropological Research in New York City, USA (link here).
